Fraction of a Number... Huh?

Assessment Tasks to check for understanding of fifth grade math standard to apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction or whole number by a fraction to solve a problem.  Students should be able to interpret the product (a/b) × q as a parts of a partition of q into b equal parts.

This activity was modified and extended from a task from the Howard County Site.  I shortened to assessment to work with small groups of math intervention students.

Students should be able to:

  • I can multiply a fraction by a whole number.
  • I can multiply a fraction by a fraction.
  • I can create story contexts for problems involving multiplication of fractions and whole numbers or multiplication of two fractions.
  • I can multiply fractional side lengths to find areas of rectangles.
