In this primary grades Illuminations lesson, students identify figures on a football field. They look for both congruent and similar figures, and they consider figures that are the same but that occur in a different orientation because of translation, rotation, or reflection. The lesson includes a student worksheet and discussion questions.

The applets in this Interactive Geometry Dictionary (IGD) will allow students an opportunity to explore finding the area of some common shapes. The applets demonstrate how to find the area of a triangle using the area of a parallelogram, which in turn can be found using the area of a rectangle. This tool also supports the lesson "What's My Area" cataloged separately.

The activities in this four-lesson unit enable students to use their knowledge of number, measurement, and geometry to solve interesting problems. Planning and visualizing, estimating and measuring, and testing and revising are components of the ladybug activities. Students design "virtual paths" that enable a ladybug to either hide under a leaf or go through a maze. They develop navigational skills by testing their path and revising it. Two interactive Java applets (Ladybug Mazes and Hiding Ladybug, cataloged separately) support student solutions.

This task provides students a chance to experiment with reflections of the plane and their impact on specific types of quadrilaterals. It is both interesting and important that these types of quadrilaterals can be distinguished by their lines of symmetry.

This classroom task gives students the opportunity to prove a surprising fact about quadrilaterals: that if we join the midpoints of an arbitrary quadrilateral to form a new quadrilateral, then the new quadrilateral is a parallelogram, even if the original quadrilateral was not.

In this unit, students investigate fractional parts of the whole and use translations, reflections, rotations, and line symmetry to make four-part quilt squares. Students have a practical context for using the mathematical terms associated with divisions of the square, transformations, and symmetries. Suggestions for implementation and extensions are included.

This interactive applet lets students create quilting type patterns and explore tessellation possibilities. The applet gives learners a choice of six polygons that can be turned or flipped and fitted together. Suggestions for exploration and five challenge patterns are provided. The tool supports a number of lessons and units including What's So Special About Triangles and Virtual Pattern Blocks (cataloged separately).

Properties of Quadrilaterals

This lesson is about properties of quadrilaterals and learning to investigate, formulate, conjecture, justify, and ultimately prove mathematical theorems. Students will: Analyze characteristics and properties of two- and three-dimensional geometric shapes; develop mathematical arguments about geometric relationships; and apply appropriate techniques, tools, and formulas to determine measurements.Explore relationships among classes of two- and three-dimensional geometric objects, make and test conjectures about them, and solve problems involving them. Employ forms of mathematical reasoning and proof appropriate to the solution of the problem at hand, including deductive and inductive reasoning, making and testing conjectures, and using counter examples and indirect proof. Identify, formulate and confirm conjectures. Establish the validity of geometric conjectures using deduction, prove theorems, and critique arguments made by others. (9th/10th Grade Math)

I use this activity as an introduction to our quadrilaterals chapter.

In this activity, students will discover the properties of quadrilaterals by looking at that different shapes and marking which quadrilaterals have specific properties.

Students that are struggling with identifying the properties I give them the "Quadrilaterals Properties" handout printed in color since the properties each have a different color.
