Taking the Guesswork Out of Choosing a Career

Before students can begin to explore careers they need to take some time to evaluate their own interests, skills and values.  Career-related assessments can be used to:

  • validate a student’s self-knowledge

  • reveal strengths and preferences

  • lead to the identification of a “work personality”

  • enable students to make sound, educated career decisions

There are many assessments that can help students examine their work personality.  This lesson provides several online and pen and paper assessment options.  Make sure that students have the opportunity to explore all three areas: Interests, Skills, and Values.

The Holland’s Personality Type Indicator, or RAISEC, is often used because of its documented validity and the preponderance of career information that is linked to the personality types.  It provides a quick and easy way for students to begin exploring job titles and careers that align with their areas of interest.

WISCareers assessments, as well as those found on O*NET, can link assessment results directly to occupational information.  For the pen and paper assessments, a website link is provided that will assist students in identifying related careers.
