In this lesson, students will gain experience in problem solving and teamwork as they practice reading graduated marks on the side of a pipette and filling a pipette to several different requested levels.

Engineers perform energy audits to better understand how people use energy and identify ways people can conserve energy. Businesses and homeowners engage these engineers to help reduce their utility bills and help the environment. Recommendations often include using compact fluorescent light bulbs, lowering the thermostat temperature in the winter when the building is unoccupied, planting trees for shade, and improving insulation to reduce heat loss/gain.

Students then count objects in different collections in a way that makes sense to them.” Finally, students synthesize their learning by considering careers which require counting skills.

By first grade, many children already believe boys are more interested than girls in engineering, the study found. By third grade, children believe that gender-based interest is true of computer science as well. Interestingly, the research revealed that stereotypes about who is interested in STEM are stronger than stereotypes about STEM ability.
