Students today face a multitude of factors affecting their personal and academic wellbeing. Poverty and homelessness, food insecurity, substance and alcohol abuse, social pressure and anxiety and depression all impact a student’s ability to learn, not to mention the acute struggles that have arisen from the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbating the pressures students feel on a daily basis. Widely viewed as an integral part of the American education system, social-emotional learning (SEL) helps young people navigate the challenges and stressors of life in and outside the classroom.
