Native American students are often bullied in school because they look different. Learning to become confident and proud of who you are is important to children's self-esteem and identity.

Learning Activities:
Read Aloud. Ask critical thinking questions throughout the story. For example, what did Grandmother mean when she said, "You are so much more than you appear." "What do they mean when they say the four-legged beings are gifts from Creator?" "What are some of the qualities that the Creator gifted you with?" "What does Grandmother mean when she says Kihew is rare?" "What does Grandmother mean when she says we can learn from the eagle and crow story?"
Conduct a whole-class discussion on the Native American qualities your students possess.
Transition to a role-playing activity. Use role-playing scenarios located in the Materials section.
End the lesson by asking students to explain why it is important to know their culture, history, and identity as well as respect other cultures.
