Overview / Description:

Veterans are revered and honored throughout the United States. Serving in one of the branches of military is very high in Indian Country. Everyone knows someone either related or unrelated to them who is serving or has served in one of the branches of the military. Students will identify and make a tribute to at least one veteran in their family or that they know of who is unrelated to them. 

Learning goals/objectives:

After completing this activity, students should be able to identify someone they know who is or has served in the military and make a tribute to them in the form of a poster (paper or digital), poem, story, song or diorama.

Prior to beginning this activity, the teacher will need to have students take home and complete a basic information sheet for gathering information about who they choose to honor. Students will need to gather a list of names of people and the branches of the military they served in, including any deployments, special honors, or other details that they want included in their project.Teacher Whole-Group10 minutes
Students will choose a veteran to honor with either an essay, poem, song, story, diorama, poster (paper or digital) or some other medium using the information from the basic information sheet they were previously given.

Upon completion or projects, teacher will have them on display in a significant area in the school.

Assessment: On-going, checking progress of project.

Did they include required items in their tribute? Is it aesthetically appealing? Is it accurate? 

Wrap-Up:

Share/display tributes and allow students to present them to the class.
