Title: Engage NY Modified 5th Grade Lesson 12, Module 3Author: Vanessa Boorse, Lynn Marrier, Dee VanDerGeest, Steve Kirsch
Subject(s):  Math
Grade Level(s): 5Total Time: 75 minutes

Overview / Description: This Engage NY/Eureka Math lesson was modified to include a Fraction Splat powerpoint.  This powerpoint presentation was used to supplement the learning objective and concept of subtracting mixed numbers from whole numbers or other mixed numbers.

Learning goals/objectives:

After completing this activity, students should be able to: Subtract fractions greater than or equal to one.

Content Standards:

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NF.A.1
Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd.)

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NF.A.2
Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers. For example, recognize an incorrect result 2/5 + 1/2 = 3/7, by observing that 3/7 < 1/2.

Math Practice Standards(Check all that apply.)

CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.

 CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP3 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
 CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP4 Model with mathematics.
 CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP5 Use appropriate tools strategically.
 CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP6 Attend to precision.
CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP7 Look for and make use of structure.
CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP8 Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Warm up - Fraction Splat PowerpointWG10 minutes
Complete each slide in the Fraction Splat powerpoint, following the prompts given. Students will discuss and analyze their answers with one another. WG10 minutes
Application Problem: Students will work together to solve word problems involving mixed number subtraction. Students are encouraged to draw a tape diagram for a visual reference. WG10 minutes
Concept Development: The teacher will represent mixed number/fraction subtraction in 2 different ways with number lines and with tape diagrams. T, WG, SG25 minutes
Problem Set: Students will work through the problem set sheets to apply their Concept Development learning.

Debrief: When students are finished with their problem set, the teacher will close the lesson with these questions: "What method did you use to solve problem 1D?" and "Do I have a volunteer who would like to show this problem using the other method.?" and "Which method do you prefer?"

Exit Ticket: The students will complete the exit ticket for a formative assessment.
