Listening to Myself (Naviance) Grafton High School; Bonnie Brady

The following ACP lesson is from the Naviance curriculum and is the third lesson in a 10-day ACP unit that all 7th graders experience during  their Business 7 course. Because we want our students to be self-reliant and self-aware as a result of the ACP process, this lesson’s objective is relevant to that end.

Prior to students completing this lesson in Naviance, they view a video clip from the movie, Pocahontas, which focuses on Pocahontas confiding in her grandmother about making an important decision regarding her future.  Grandmother encourages Pocahontas to listen to her heart. During class discussion, students then define what it means to “listen to their heart.”

As students view the video in Naviance, they complete a note-taking task to help them prepare for the lesson summary and follow-up discussion.  Their notes include answers to the following questions provided to them.

  1. List at least two (2) examples of “Noise.”  What is your “Noise?”

  2. Name at least two (2) sources for the “Noise.”

  3. Describe the feelings the students in the video had when they listened to the “Noise.”

  4. What did you notice about the feelings of the adults who listened to their inner voice?
