MAPS Math Lesson Plan
|Title: 2nd Grade Mod 6 Lesson 16 with a Tessellation Project||Author: Christopher Hahn|
|Grade Level(s): 2nd||Total Time: 60 minutes|
Overview / Description: This lesson is about creating designs to develop spatial structuring. It starts out with a brief video that relates directly to the goals. Next, students create their own tessellation project.
After completing this activity, students should be able to . . .create a design using spatial structuring with no gaps and no overlaps.
Content Standards:2.G.2-Partition a rectangle into rows and columns of same-size squares and count to find the total number of them.
Math Practice Standards: (Check all that apply.)
CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
|CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively.|
|CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP3 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.|
|CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP4 Model with mathematics.|
|CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP5 Use appropriate tools strategically.||X|
|CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP6 Attend to precision.|
|CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP7 Look for and make use of structure.||X|
|CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP8 Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.|
Describe each step of the learning activity including strategies that will be used to meet the learning objective (application, concept development, problem set, etc.).
WHO (T=Teacher Focus Lesson; WG=Whole Group\; SM=Small Group; I=Independent)
|Learning Activity Task||WHO is responsible |
for this step?
|Approximate time |
|View the tessellation video from YouTube and discuss.||WG||5min|
|Demonstrate how to make a tessellation puzzle piece.||T||10min|
|Students cut out and make their own tessellation piece.||WG||10min|
|Students trace and create their tessellation picture and design.||WG||35min|
Assessment: Our formative assessment will be looking at students' projects to see that they could create a design using spatial structuring with no gaps and no overlaps.
Wrap-Up/Closing: Students will share their creation that they made with their table mates.
