Title:

Engage NY Modified 3rd Grade Lesson 8 Module 6

Author:
Angie Zocher
Subject(s): Math-Fractions
Grade Level(s): 3rdTotal Time: 75 minutes

Overview / Description: This Engage NY/Eureka Math lesson was modified to include a numberless word problem. The Google Slides presentation from Eureka was changed to fit the modifications that were made to the lesson and to help the teacher navigate throughout the math instruction. The main learning objective is that students will represent measurement data with line plots.

Learning goals/objectives: Represent measurement data with line plots.

After completing this activity, students should be able to represent measurement data with line plots.

Content Standards:

3.OA.1-Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 × 7.

3.OA.7-Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division (e.g., knowing that 8 × 5 = 40, one knows 40 ÷ 5 = 8) or properties of operations. By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers.

3.MD.4-Generate measurement data by measuring lengths using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. Show the data by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in appropriate units— whole numbers, halves, or quarters

Math Practice Standards(Check all that apply.)

CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.

 x
CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively.  x
CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP3 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.  x
 CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP4 Model with mathematics.  x
CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP5 Use appropriate tools strategically.  x
 CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP6 Attend to precision.  x
CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP7 Look for and make use of structure.  x
CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP8 Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.  x

Fluency Practice: The students will complete the Sprint sheets to practice multiplying by 7.I7 minutes
Fluency Practice: The students will practice counting by halves and fourths as the teacher records.WG4 minutes
Application Problem: Students will practice their pictorial representation of a number line with fractional intervals. The word problem is broken into many little steps where at the end of each step the students list their “wonderings” and what they notice. This is modeled from a numberless word problem drill in order to teach word problem attack strategies.WG3 minutes
Concept Development: The teacher will facilitate a discussion guiding the students to analyze the data to identify the smallest and largest units and make a decision about the measurement interval that should be used. The students will model this visual by drawing the pictorial representation on their personal whiteboards. They will then create a line plot of the measurement data.T, WG, SM33 minutes
Problem Set: Students will work through the problem set sheets to apply their Concept Development learning.

Student Debrief: When students are finished with their problem set, the teacher will close the lesson with these reflection statements:

“Look at Problem (b). With a partner, compare the steps you took to create the line plot”

“What can you say about most of the leaves from Delilah's tree?”

Exit Ticket: The students will complete the Exit Ticket for a formative assessment.
