Keyboarding Reverse Typing Game
This is a supplementary keyboarding game that can be used to help students think about and demonstrate that they know which fingers are supposed to type each letter key. Students (or pair of students) are given a deck of cards that have each finger written on them. A word is then displayed on the screen and the students are to spell the word by laying the cards in order by the finger that would type the letters that make up the word. For instance, if the word "ask" was displayed. The students would lay out in order "left pinky, left ring, right middle" as these three fingers type the A, S, and K.
Have fun playing this with your students. Here are some different variations that you could do:
- You could play as individuals
- You could play as pairs. Where if you do a pair, one person can only put down left hand cards and the other can only put down right hand cards. This will promote communication as well.
- Give a point for all teams if they get the correct answer
- Give a point for the fastest team or fastest three teams to get the correct answer each round
Hint: It makes it much easier for students to play the game if they have the cards laid out in piles in front of them in the order your hands go. As illustrated in the picture below.
This picture shows how to place the cards to setup the reverse typing game.
Here is the PowerPoint that is displayed that shows the words. The words get more difficult as more letters on the keyboard get introduced.
Here is a Microsoft Word file of the cards. Each person or team will need three sheets of these as some words you have to type more than one letter with the same finger. For example, "dad" is "left middle, left pinky, left middle". You could print these on card stock so they hold up better and even have different colors if you want.
