Purpose:

The purpose of this lab is to introduce students to the process for calculating density by determining the density of a wood block and 25 mL of water.

Materials List:

Wood blockMetric RulerGraduated CylinderElectronic Balance

Calculations Needed:

Density = mass/volume        Volume (solid) = LxBxH

Procedure:

  1. Find the mass of your graduated cylinder.  Record your measurement
  2. Add 25mL of water to the graduated cylinder.  Write down the volume of the cylinder with the liquid in it.
  3. Find the mass of the graduated cylinder with the water in it.  Record the mass.
  4. Subtract the mass of the cylinder from the mass of the cylinder with the liquid in it.  Record the difference.  That is the mass of the water alone.
  5. Determine the density of the liquid using the formula above.
  6. Determine the volume (cm3) of the wood block.  Record your results
  7. Find the mass of the wood block.  Record your results.
  8. Determine the density of the wood block using the formula above.

Conclusions:

Based on your results, would your wood block float in water?

Why have you come to this conclusion?

Extend Your Learning:

Using what you know, obtain three cubes from the density block set and find the mass, volume, and density of each item.  Identify your material based on the density chart.
