Abe Lincoln's Crossroads

Abraham Lincoln's Crossroads is an educational game based on the traveling exhibition Lincoln: The Constitution & the Civil War, which debuted at the National Constitution Center in June 2005.
The online game is intended for advanced middle- and high-school students. It invites them to learn about Lincoln's leadership by exploring the political choices he made. An animated Lincoln introduces a situation, asks for advice and prompts players to decide the issue for themselves, before learning the actual outcome. At the end of the game, players discover how frequently they predicted Lincoln's actions. A Resources Page keyed to each chapter provides links to relevant Websites on Lincoln and the Civil War, permitting students to explore issues in more depth.

A Close Reading of the First Four Presidents:  Washington through Madison

Students will read an article online about the first four presidents. The online article provides scaffolds for vocabulary and reading. Students can use the online quiz to check for understanding. Students will then perform a close reading of the article following six text dependent questions. The lesson describes the activities along with the language to use for each of the questions.

John Muir is known as the father of our National Parks. His boyhood was spent in Marquette County, Wisconsin where he found inspiration in the wilderness around him. In this Unit, students will learn about John Muir’s boyhood neighborhood and actively work to preserve it, connect with Muir’s many accomplishments, understand different environmental philosophies, and saunter in nature while observing and reflecting on the world around them. Students will Connect, Explore, and Engage through intentional time in nature, reflective writing, reading inspirational passages by Muir, and using technology to document changes over time.

Developed by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, this resource guide would be useful both in a single lesson for Lincoln's Birthday or for an extended look at Lincoln's Presidency and the challenges presented by the Civil War. The guide includes 3 middle school lessons including: "Understanding the Gettysburg Address", "The Language of the Gettysburg Address", and "A Civil Conversation". It allows for opportunities to include as part of the ELA curriculum as well.
