Students will conduct an experiment to examine how the process of osmosis affects the functioning of cells in the body. Students will observe, test and retest the change a vegetable undergoes when it sits in salt water and then put back in fresh water. Students then connect the process of hydration/dehydration to their own life and why they feel thirsty after eating salty foods.

Within this lesson, students will be exploring the changes an egg will make when being placed in different liquids, linking to the experimentation of osmosis/diffusion. Students will complete observations over a 3 day period and will chart/graph their results.  There is an introductory reading article and additional resources to guide students through this lab.

Objective:
Interpret figures of speech through drawing inferences from Emily Dickinson's diction.
Big Idea:
Literal meaning and implied meaning can create confusion in readers; Dickinson's poetic descriptions of common things illustrate this to provide understanding for students.
Students will utilize speaking, listening, reading, writing, and audio-visual medium, and then synthesize sources to demonstrate understanding of figures of speech through a homework writing assignment.

Students are provided with a unit plan where they will track their progress through the unit.
In part of the unit students will employ close reading skills of an informational text where they mark up the text with connections they made to something in their life, questions they still have and "found it!" items where they found a specific piece of information in the text. Once students understand how a cell membrane works they are ready to create a model of a cell membrane and conduct and investigation of getting items in and out of the cell.
There is also a formative assessment piece as well as a graph to track their level of understanding through the unit.

This resource is a lesson plan that can be used to introduce students to the metric system. The lesson starts with a powerpoint story that introduces students to a mnenomic device to help remember the metric prefixes. The lesson then has students create a foldable so that they can investigate the different metric units. The lesson ends with a word sort. There are videos that show how the foldables and the word sort work.

"Given a set of criteria about climate and soil, students research carnivorous plants and create a model that will support their argument of how external parts help this plant survive in its environment."
This highly engaging lesson involves live venus fly traps as students investigate specialized parts of plants. It includes a professionally shot video with teacher reflections and descriptions of the "why" behind the lesson. Math is integrated into the lesson linking concepts of time and symmetry. It is a lot to put into 60 minutes and I think the last section could easily be done the next day.

This discovery lesson is a good introduction to basic three states of matter plus gives students the ability to explore and learn how air takes up space. I like how she uses different types of solids to help students remember that solids can be soft. All materials are easily accessible.
Excellent resources for a "Lapbook" as an alternative to a science notebook. It is step by step, has video of students learning, suggestions, teacher reflections and is a printable resource.

This is the second of a two part lesson from BetterLesson.com from 5th grade Master Teacher Kara Nelson. She implements wise use of video to support prior knowledge and push forward the learning. This lesson helps students explore the placement of particles within states of matter to help them correalate how molecules make up different states of matter. The focus on the crosscutting concept helps link the first lesson to the second smoothly.
