In this unit, high school juniors will research one career of their choice, based on analysis of results of their three assessments on Career Cruising (Career Matchmaker, Ability Profiler and Learning Styles Inventory). In this process, students will develop the skills necessary to writing a high-quality, well-founded research paper. Topics will include source integrity, works cited pages (both formatting and the creation of citations for works cited page), the correct format for various in-text citations, stages of research, development of graphic organizers, translation of graphic organizer in the creation of an outline, transferring outline topics to paragraphs, developing strong introductory and concluding paragraphs, creating effective transition sentences, formatting cover pages, editing, revising, peer editing and submission of final draft.

The Claim Evidence Graphic Organizer Writing Template was created for the CESA #1 EL OER Project. This writing template was created for EL students to use to aid in the writing process. It contains a detailed and easy to follow outline for students to input their knowledge. The organizer is color coded so that students will be able to navigate and organize their thoughts and textual evidence. There are also videos that are linked that ELs can watch to help them create each part in their argumentative essay. Teachers are able to apply this template to various argumentative essay assignments within different content areas.

The Skills Strand teaches the mechanics of reading. Students are taught systematic and explicit phonics instruction as their primary tool for decoding written English. By the end of grade 2, students have learned all of the sound spelling correspondences in the English language and are able to decode written material they encounter. In addition to phonics, students also are taught spelling, grammar, and writing during the Skills Strand. A downloadable story "Kits Hats" with illustrations is provided for instruction.
