The Look Back is a series made for learners in grades 4-6 that explores eras from Wisconsin’s history through artifacts. The series is hosted by historians who model an inquiry process: sharing artifacts, asking questions, visiting archives and museums to learn more, telling the story of their findings as they go, and making connections to our lives today.

The series is a collaboration between PBS Wisconsin Education, the Wisconsin Historical Society, the Rebecca M. Blank Center for Campus History, University of Wisconsin–Madison Libraries, Wisconsin educators and learners, and museums and historical preservation and interpretation organizations throughout Wisconsin.

Maa Vue is a singer/songwriter based in the Wausau area of Wisconsin who creates music in the Hmong language. In her journey as a musician, she draws from her emotions while celebrating her culture and challenging expectations.

In this episode of NJEA’s Classroom Close-up, Fort Lee’s School No. 1 is using music to extend concentration among general and special education students in kindergarten through second grade. In addition, working one-on-one using dials to analyze a student’s response to various genres of music, educators are studying the impact the music has on a student’s ability to focus, which will help to improve and enhance student learning.

"This course is an investigation into the history and aesthetics of music and technology as deployed in experimental and popular musics from the 19th century to the present. Through original research, creative hands-on projects, readings, and lectures, the following topics will be explored. The history of radio, audio recording, and the recording studio, as well as the development of musique concr?te and early electronic instruments. The creation and extension of musical interfaces by composers such as Harry Partch, John Cage, Conlon Nancarrow, and others. The exploration of electromagnetic technologies in pickups, and the development of dub, hip-hop, and turntablism. The history and application of the analog synthesizer, from the Moog modular to the Roland TR-808. The history of computer music, including music synthesis and representation languages. Contemporary practices in circuit bending, live electronics, and electro-acoustic music, as well as issues in copyright and intellectual property, will also be examined. No prerequisites."

Focuses on musical traditions of West Africa. A variety of musical practices and their cultural contexts are explored through listening, reading and written assignments with an emphasis on class discussion. Subject includes in-class instruction in Senegalese drumming, song and dance, as well as live lecture-demonstrations by guest performers from throughout West Africa. This course is an introduction to selected musical traditions of West Africa. After an introductory unit, the course will be organized around four main geographical areas: Senegal, Mali, Ghana, and Nigeria. An in-depth study of music from these countries will be interspersed with brief overviews of Southern, Central, and East Africa.

In this lesson, students will learn about the tribes in the state of Wisconsin and how they celebrate the social gathering of the powwow. Students will view videos of powwow related to the tribes that are close by, or who's land their school is on. Students will also read the book Bowwow Powwow by Brenda Child.

With the purpose of assisting Wisconsin middle and high school students to better understand the various aspects of Academic and Career Planning, CESA 10 has reached out to past graduates. Young professionals will share information about their chosen occupation, as well as career-related experiences during high school that were beneficial in discovering their own ACP journey.

Richard Hildner Armacanqui and Juan Tomás Martínez are two musicians based in Madison, Wisconsin who weave together their experiences, travels, and cultures to make their eclectic music.

Bria is a young musician who can’t decide what to do with her future. She’s not sure whether she wants a career in music or medicine. So, who better to help her out than world-famous composer Chloe Flower? By fusing her lifelong passion for classical music with her love of hip-hop beats, Chloe created a musical style that’s all her own. Chauntee Ross and Monique Ross are two sisters from Milwaukee who make music together as SistaStrings. They combine their classical training with gospel and other influences to tell stories of their lives today through music. They connect their own experiences to their ancestors and to the next generation—their young performance students.

This course considers reggae, or Jamaican popular music more generally--in its various forms (ska, rocksteady, roots, dancehall)--as constituted by international movements and exchanges and as a product that circulates globally in complex ways. By reading across the reggae literature, as well as considering reggae texts themselves (songs, films, videos, and images), students will scrutinize the different interpretations of reggae's significance and the implications of different interpretations of the story of Jamaica and its music. Beginning with a consideration of how Jamaica's popular music industry emerged out of transnational exchanges, the course will proceed to focus on reggae's circulation outside of Jamaica via diasporic networks and commercial mediascapes. Among other sites, we will consider reggae's resonance and impact elsewhere in the Anglo Caribbean (e.g., Trinidad, Barbados), the United Kingdom (including British reggae styles but also such progeny as jungle, grime, and dubstep), the United States (both as reggae per se and in hip-hop), Panama and Puerto Rico and other Latin American locales (e.g., Brazil), Japan and Australia, as well as West, South, and East Africa (CĺŞte d'Ivoire, Tanzania, Uganda).

Wade Fernandez is a musician who lives on the Menominee Reservation in Northeastern Wisconsin and tours internationally performing his music. He finds inspiration for his compositions in nature and draws from musical genres from all over the world.
