"Then and Now," helps students to visualize the affects of human development on wildlife. How do human settlements (parking lots, apartment buildings, etc.) influence wildlife habitat and populations? What are the effects of man-made structures on native and non-native species? These questions are explored by interpreting aerial photographs and related information sources in an attempt to uncover some of the correlations between changes in habitat and types of wildlife.
This resource is a step by step lesson that aims to educate the learner about safe and unsafe drinking water, how to make and use an aquifer using a cup and educate how groundwater can be contimed making it unsafe to drink. Also this lesson has objectives, material list, procedure, and follow up sections.

So much is happening in the world around us, all we have to do to learn is observe. The seasons change, the trees grow and develop. From the tapping of the trees, boiling down, canning, educating, and processing. It is very beautiful from beginning to end. The lessons learned while working with maple trees can be directly applied and used in our own lives.The culturally-relevant text sets offer different perspectives for students to see as well as wonderful conversation starters. Students learn of different careers within the Indigenous World. Some of those careers being: Traditional Seed Keepers, Gardeners, Knowledge Keepers, Storytellers, and More!
We developed an interdisciplinary lesson to help students investigate the structure and function of leaf sizes at the top and bottom of a tree. This lesson could be used with fourth-grade students as well as elementary teacher candidates to model how to get children outdoors to learn.
Through this experience, preservice teachers will learn about and experience the benefits of nature journaling, supports for beginning nature journaling, and how to successfully take children outdoors to learn.

An amalgamation of tribes that were forced from the East Coast to Indiana and then Wisconsin, the Brothertown cling determinedly to their Indian heritage.
By the banks of the Lemonweir River in what for ages had been Ho-Chunk territory, Andy Thundercloud shares the oral tradition of his people. Thundercloud tells of a traveling people who migrated across the land to become many different tribes, of the importance of maintaining the traditional language, and of the wonderful way of life he has known.

This activity reviews the concept of trophic cascades. Trophic cascades occur when predators reduce the abundance or change the activity of their prey, thereby allowing species in the next trophic level to increase in number. These indirect effects by the predator can trickle down (or cascade) to many lower levels of the food chain. In a classic example, sea otters protect kelp forests, sea otters protect kelp forests by controlling the abundance of urchins that graze upon the kelp. In the absence of otters, urchins consume most of the kelp and negatively affect other organisms that live in the kelp forests.
Trophic cascades have been described in numerous ecosystems ranging from kelp forests of the Pacific Ocean to arctic islands, to Central American jungles, to salt marshes. In this activity student use organism cards to build examples of trophic cascades based in different ecosystems, including several in Wisconsin!
How does a trunk carry the story of conserving natural resources?
The Civilian Conservation Corps, known as the CCC, was one of the programs started by President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal. It created new jobs for young American men to work on drought and wildfire relief, soil erosion, and state parks and public outdoor spaces. CCC members worked long days and lived in barracks at camps.

The collection is hosted by historians who model an inquiry process: sharing artifacts, asking questions, visiting archives and museums to learn more, telling the story of their findings as they go, and making connections to our lives today.

Explore what the United Nations sustainability goals are and their purpose for improving the human and environmental global community. After learning about the goals in general,s students will dig deeper into understanding how achieving Goal #6 Access to Clean Water and Sanitation looks different in every country. After learning about their other countries, students will explore how Wisconsin's own drinking water must be monitored to make sure it's safe. Students will then be asked to explore ways they can alert people to the need to test and make sure their own drinking water is safe.
The United States marked the start of International Polar Year (IPY), a global research effort, with an event hosted by the National Academies and the National Science Foundation on Feb. 26, 2007, in Washington, D.C. During the ceremony, a panel of polar scientists discussed the latest research and presented an overview of expeditions to take place during IPY. There also were remarks by government leaders whose agencies play an active role in this international effort.
