A specific skill that was shared by the Laboratory Scientist during the teacher externship experience at HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital was the ability to use a bulb pipette accurately. In this lesson, students will gain experience in problem solving and teamwork as they practice reading graduated marks on the side of a pipette and filling a pipette to several different requested levels.

In this lesson, students will gain experience in problem solving and teamwork as they practice using a Broselow Pediatric Reference Tape to measure a variety of “patients” and then apply that measurement correctly when answering associated questions.

JA of Wisconsin is hosting a series of monthly JA Career Speaker Series virtual panels throughout the 22-23 school year for students in grades 7-12. Each 45 minute panel will feature four professionals, three speakers and a moderator. Each speaker will tell their career story, share wisdom and inspiration with students to “dream big”, followed by 15 minutes for questions from the students.

All students will need to ask for a reference or letter of recommendation in their future whether for a college application, scholarship application or future employment.  A comprehensive Academic and Career Planning Program teaches students how to make the ask.  Helping students prepare their references with letter of recommendation forms, current resume, and scholarship/job desciptions, will help them get their references prepared to provide relevant information.

All students need support to find their pathways to a fulfilling and successful life after high school. No matter what their abilities are, students need access to high-quality education and should graduate prepared for the best future that awaits them. In addition to core academics, students need to develop the attitudes, skills, and knowledge to be prepared for their futures.

Students who are receiving Special Education services deserve no less than their general education peers, and may require additional support along the way.

Whether it is considered part of IEP transition planning or broader college and career readiness initiatives, future planning for students in Special Education must be student-centered, giving them a voice in the process.
