Facing the Future interdisciplinary curriculum provide educators with the educational materials and resources they need to ignite their students’ interest in complex global issues while helping them achieve academically. They have these four goals:
• Understand global issues and sustainability in a way that shows the connections between population, environment, consumption, poverty, conflict, and other global issues
• Develop a global perspective
• Learn critical thinking skills
• Be inspired to take personal action

Controversial issues are complex topics that are grounded in conflicting values or opinions and can result in emotional reactions and public dispute. Schools may avoid difficult issues that could bring forth feelings of fear, confusion, or anger. This lesson plan highlights: searching for trusted health information, how to read a webpage – quick facts and key points, how to tell if the information you found is from a good source, finding websites in other languages, and local places to use the internet.

A specific skill that was shared by the Laboratory Scientist during the teacher externship experience at HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital was the ability to use a bulb pipette accurately. In this lesson, students will gain experience in problem solving and teamwork as they practice reading graduated marks on the side of a pipette and filling a pipette to several different requested levels.
