The Wisconsin Social Studies/Civics K-5 Suggested Scope & Sequence is divided by grade. Each grade has a theme, with K-2 having a common theme of “place” and 3-5 having a common theme of “Wisconsin and U.S. Studies”. Each grade has 4-10 topics, which could align to local units. This formatting was adapted from the 2018 History and Social Science Framework by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and
Secondary Education.

Each topic is further divided into planning ideas tied to specific grade-level indicators from the Wisconsin Standards for Social Studies (2018). These planning ideas include:
• Potential Essential Questions, tied to the standards
• Focusing Questions for the topic
• Driving (DQ) and Guiding (GQ) Questions from the Educating for American Democracy Roadmap
• Specific Social Studies Indicators met with this topic
• Important Terms and Points to Consider
• Supporting Resources to Consider, including lesson plans from trusted resources, and suggested additional texts such as primary sources and trade books.

The essential, focusing, driving, and guiding questions are meant to help guide instruction
and determine quality resources and lessons for use in the classroom.

Native People of Wisconsin explores the Native Nations in Wisconsin, including their histories and cultural traditions. Readers will use the text’s maps, illustrations, and photographs to investigate how rapid change like the arrival of Europeans impacted Native culture. Profiles of young people from each Wisconsin First Nation also help students learn about life today.

Chapters include Early History, European Arrivals, The Menominee Nation, The Ho-Chunk Nation, The Ojibwe Nation, The Potawatomi Nation, The Oneida Nation, Stockbridge-Munsee Community of Mohican Indians, The Brothertown Indian Nation, and Urban Indians

A detailed teaching guide complete with printable maps, student activity books, and comprehension activities is included.

This is a ready-to-use professional learning module about literacy-related collaboration. It includes techniques and protocols for establishing and refining teams, as well as strategies for when collaboration becomes difficult.

Although the module focuses on literacy, the strategies are applicable to any team of adults.

The Ways is a series of stories from Native communities around the central Great Lakes. This online educational resource explores connections between traditional ways and those of today. The engaging series features tribal communities of Wisconsin, Minnesota, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. An interactive map shows story locations and compares treaty lands, reservations, and Native population around the central Great Lakes. The Ways supports educators in meeting the requirements of Wisconsin Act 31, seeking to expand and challenge current understanding of Native identity and communities.

This case study is one of three describing the development and implementation of social and emotional learning (SEL) integrated with career and workforce development efforts in Delaware, Kansas, and Wisconsin.

Wisconsin’s journey is an exemplar for other states looking to do this work. While every state has its own context, Wisconsin’s emphasis on developing inter-agency and cross-sector collaboration, leveraging strong foundations of existing career and workforce development efforts, and supporting practical implementation at the district level are key elements of systemic integration of SEL.
