As a junior and/or senior, you may have a unique opportunity to participate in a program which allows you to spend part of your day or week in on-the-job training called Youth Apprenticeship. Youth Apprenticeship (YA) integrates school-based and work-based learning to instruct students in employability and occupational skills defined by Wisconsin industries. In this lesson, you will investigate the Youth Apprenticeship program and connect with your local Youth Apprenticeship coordinator if you are interested.

Welcome back to Xello! You’ve been adding important information into your Xello profile the past four years. From skills to experiences to favorite careers, your Xello profile should be full of information about you, what you are interested in, and what you’ve done so far to work towards college or career after high school. Today, we’ll be taking all of that information and putting it together into a resume. First, follow the directions to log into Xello and personalize your Xello page with your tenth grade banner and photo.

In this Xello interactive lesson, you will make choices about how you intend to live life after graduation to help you identify some of your most important lifestyle goals and assess whether or not you can achieve your lifestyle goals in a career that interests you.

You’ve used Xello matchmaker to gain some insight into careers which align with your interests. You continued by taking the Personality Assessment to align your career choices to your personality traits. Now you’ll finish the mission by completing the last questions in the Matchmaker Mission Complete, which will help refine your career choices.

The Internet has hundreds of places where you can find career information. We’ve explored a few new places besides Xello over the years. Another great resource is videos! If you aren’t familiar with TedTalks, they are short informational speeches about a particular topic. Today you’ll have the choice of a TedTalk to watch on a career-related topic and then you’ll reflect on what you learned from the talk.

Back in 8th Grade, you first investigated your post-secondary options. You learned about the 16 Career Clusters and thought about those most of interest to you. To help you zero in on the clusters which interest you the most, we’re going to use the Career Cluster Quiz found on the Waukesha County Technical College website.

A work value is something that's important to you in a career. For example, you may value a career that allows you to work with your hands, or be outdoors, or work on the computer exclusively. You may prefer a work environment that provides you with immediate feedback on your performance or one where you work independently. Whatever you value, knowing what's important to you can set you on the path to a career you'll find satisfying. Today, you will consider the values which will help you to choose the best career fit for you. You have two options for finding this information.

What is labor market information? Why is it important when thinking about what types of careers you might want to do in your future? Knowing the labor market in your area can help you save time and money by focusing your educational and employment choices to those jobs which actually have openings or are growth opportunities. Today we’ll be investigating some of the Labor Market Information resources provided by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) to help you conduct labor market research on careers of interest.

Employers often talk about the skills they need in an employee. You may have heard them referred to as soft skills or employability skills or transferable skills. We like to them of them as essential skills, because they are skills that are essential to just about any career. These might include communication skills or basic measurement skills or teamwork. In this Xello lesson, you’ll have the opportunity to think about the skills which are essential to careers today.

In this weekly activity, students complete a self-assessment rubric and timesheets on a weekly basis and submit to the instructor. In this lesson, you will learn how to conduct a job search at a particular company and in a particular region: local, state or national.You are able to conduct this job search in one of two ways.  If you are entering the workforce directly after high school graduation, you will conduct this job search based on your current reality and experience.  If you plan to attend a technical college or four-year college, you will conduct this job search as if you have earned your certificate and/or degree following college graduation.  

In this lesson, you will write a one-page cover letter to include with a resume when applying for a job. You'll have the opportunity to review some cover letters to see which information makes the most impact with employers and then create one of your own.

A resume is a document used by a person to present their education, skills, work history, and accomplishments. Generally a resume is used when someone is looking for a job. In this lesson, you will critique four resume examples, and then you will construct your own resume.

In the job search process, once you’ve applied for a job and perhaps sent a cover letter and resume, the next step is the interview. Employers generally want to speak face-to-face (or virtually) with potential employees to see if they are a fit for the position employers are hoping to fill. In this lesson, you will prepare and participate in a mock interview to prepare yourself for the real thing.

Most students know about post-secondary opportunities through 4-year or technical colleges. But did you know there is another career opportunity which combines on-the-job experience with technical college coursework? In Wisconsin, this opportunity is called a Registered Apprenticeship. In this lesson, you will be learning about Adult Apprenticeships and how to pursue an apprenticeship after high school graduation if it aligns with your career goal. 

Graduation is right around the corner! In this lesson, you will ensure your final high school transcript contains all of the graduation requirements necessary for your high school. You’ll then review how to send that transcript to the college/university you plan to attend.  You will know how to get your AP scores and dual credits to the college/university you plan to attend.
