Finding themselves in the middle of the Amazon rainforest after a plane crash, students use map scales, keys, and longitude and latitude coordinates to figure out where they are. Then they work in groups to generate ideas and make plans. They decide where they should go to be rescued, the distance to that location, the route to take, and make calculations to estimate walking travel time.

Students must first examine an interview excerpt on a race riot in Nashville during the Civil Rights Movement, then determine which facts can help them evaluate the interview's reliability. Strong students will be able to explain how the the gap in time between the riot and the interview (Fact 2) and that Cleaver was not present for the riot (Fact 3) make the account less reliable.

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction has developed a series of three Data and Assessment Literacy modules. These three modules provide flexible learning opportunities for pre-service teachers, veteran teachers, administrators, and school board members. They may be accessed via slides to be used as a district-wide, school-wide, or small group PLC learning experience or individually on-line.
